Tigmanshu Dhulia’s Ghamasaan is the kind of film that seems to belong on a large screen।
Shot on anamorphic lenses to evoke the feel of a Western and filmed almost entirely on location across Dholpur, Bundelkhand and Chitrakoot, it has a raw, dusty visual quality that suits its world of ravines, guns and men living by their own rules।
There is a slight irony, then, in a film conceived as a theatrical experience eventually finding its primary audience on comparatively small screens.Reportedly inspired by dacoit Dadua, Ghamasaan uses that real-world association as a starting point rather than presenting itself as a straightforward biographical account।
It is closer to a Hindi heartland Western, built around the pursuit of a feared outlaw and the uneasy relationship between crime, politics and the police।
That territory is familiar to Dhulia।
As a casting director, he worked on Bandit Queen, and as a filmmaker he returned to the world of the Chambal and its outlaws with Paan Singh Tomar।
Ghamasaan feels like another chapter in his continuing fascination with men pushed to the margins and the systems that create, protect or destroy them.At the centre of the film is IPS officer Aditya Singh, played by Pratik Gandhi।
Aditya heads a Special Task Force assigned to track down Maharaj, a feared dacoit played by Arshad Warsi।
What makes Aditya interesting is precisely what he is not।

He isn't the usual larger-than-life policeman who can single-handedly take on an army of men।
He is controlled, methodical and almost unnervingly calm।
There is something of Vijay from Zanjeer in him, but without the anger and fire।
He is a career officer who understands the machinery of the system and, rather than constantly fighting it, knows how to use its loopholes to get the job done.Maharaj, meanwhile, is a particularly intriguing creation।
He is part Gabbar Singh and part Veerappan, a man who has become a terror in the backwaters because of his links with politicians and the police।
Yet Dhulia does not make him conventionally flamboyant।
Warsi's familiar screen persona works in the film's favour because Maharaj doesn't immediately look like the Hindi-film image of a dacoit।
The distance between the actor we know and the brutality of the character makes him more unsettling.Interestingly, Gandhi and Warsi never shot together।
In fact, their characters don't even meet in the film।
