There is something inherently compelling about a story in which one man stands between an entire community and what appears to be a better future।
Adapted from Aravind Adiga’s 2011 novel Last Man in Tower, the film uses the redevelopment of an ageing Mumbai housing society to examine greed, memory, ageing, family and the complicated idea of progress.At the centre is Yogesh Mishra, better known as Masterji (Manoj Bajpayee), a retired schoolteacher living in Vishram Housing Society।
When developer Dharmesh Shah (Boman Irani) makes the residents an offer to vacate their homes for redevelopment, most see it as an opportunity।
Why cling to an old building when you can have money, a better home and a fresh start? Masterji, however, refuses to accept the offer।
What begins as an act of personal conviction gradually turns him from a respected member of the community into the man standing in the way of everyone else's aspirations.The film's greatest strength is that it does not make the argument entirely black and white।
Masterji is not necessarily fighting modernity।
He is fighting the idea that modernity should force him to surrender his past।
For him, the flat is not simply a piece of property।
It contains decades of memories, relationships, routines and a sense of identity।

For others, particularly the younger residents, it is an asset and an opportunity।
The same four walls mean very different things to different people.That conflict extends beautifully into Masterji's relationship with his son Gaurav (Sukant Goel)।
Gaurav, who lives elsewhere with his wife and son, cannot quite understand his father's stubborn attachment to the flat, and their disagreements give the redevelopment battle a more intimate dimension।
To Masterji, the home represents memory, dignity and identity।
To his son, it can look more like property, money and opportunity for future growth।
Goel is very good at conveying that frustration without turning Gaurav into an insensitive son.Divya Dutta is equally effective as Sangeeta Puri, Masterji's neighbour।
Her circumstances make the disagreement particularly poignant।
As a mother of a child with special needs, she sees the redevelopment offer as a chance to secure a better home and greater financial stability for her family।
Her conflict with Masterji is therefore not merely ideological।
