I had joined Shyam Benegal as an assistant in the direction department when my older brother, Govind Nihalani, was Shyam Babu’s cinematographer।
I must have joined Benegal immediately after he finished Ankur, during Charandas Chor in 1973-74, which was also Smita Patil’s debut।
We later worked on Nishant, Bhumika, Manthan and Mandi।
In fact, the titles of Nishant, Bhumika and Manthan were given by me to Shyam Babu.Smita was so easy with us assistants।
She never got us into any trouble or complained about us to the higher-ups।
She would also welcome our suggestions if we had any।
She was never dismissive of our opinions and would say, “Please do give feedback,” during a script session or whatever else।
Even with Shyam, we learnt on the job।
He would never stop us from having an opinion or put fear into us.There was no hierarchy।

We would sit under the shade of a tree and all of us would eat lunch।
She didn’t talk down to us because we were third or fourth assistants.Smita was so easy।
I remember during Manthan, in the village in Gujarat where we shot, there was a swarm of flies and we assistants tried to swat them away।
Smita would say, “Just let them be.” If you see the scenes, there are flies over her face in some of the shots.When Smita would rehearse, she would be soft, or eat up her words, but the minute the take was on, she would transform like a chameleon।
We were all close to one another’s age, so most of us were on back-slapping terms।
But you know, even when she was playing practical jokes or horsing around, you could tell her mind was constantly on the scenes and how she would approach them.Be it by bus or by train, Smita was happy to travel with the unit।
She made no fuss despite being a star।
Between shots and all, she would sing film songs and Marathi songs।
I could sense she had a great sense of music.All films of Shyam Babu didn't require dubbing as he used the sync sound. (Sound recorded during shooting at the location)।
